The Democratic National Committee will consider a challenge to youth activist David Hogg’s election as vice chair, following allegations that the February vote “discriminated against three women of color candidates.”
Kalyn Free, a Native American activist and longtime Democratic Party operative, filed a complaint weeks after her loss to Hogg, arguing she lost a “fatally flawed election that violated the DNC Charter and discriminated against three women of color candidates” and calling for “two new vice chair elections,” Semafor reported.
The DNC notified its members on Monday that it will meet virtually on May 12 to consider Free’s challenge.
Free’s challenge comes as Hogg already faces intraparty backlash over his $20 million pledge to fund younger, more left-wing candidates to replace “ineffective, asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats in deep-blue House districts. DNC chairman Ken Martin, who has publicly criticized Hogg’s campaign, introduced a proposal last week that would require all committee officials to remain neutral in Democratic primaries—effectively forcing Hogg to end the funding effort or resign as vice chair.
Hogg, who became a public figure after surviving the 2018 Parkland school shooting, may also face charges of hypocrisy in light of Free’s claims. He tweeted in 2022 that he was “not running for office” and that “we have enough straight white men in power.”
“It’d be nice to see some people who actually look like our country and not privilege,” he wrote at the time.
In her complaint, Free argued that “by aggregating votes across ballots and failing to distinguish between gender categories in a meaningful way, the DNC’s process violated its own Charter and Bylaws, undermining both fairness and gender diversity.”
Attorneys for Hogg dismissed Free’s accusations, saying that the election “was conducted in compliance with the rules in place at the time” and that it is “inappropriate to try to revise those rules or decisions after the fact through a credentials challenge,” according to Semafor.
