Woke on Steroids: Vanderbilt University Prof Claims Math is Racist White Supremacy and Anti-Gay

Remember when we used to hear professors and scientists talk about how math was the universal language of the universe? It used to be that mathematics was the same regardless of your socioeconomic background, native language, or hell, even the time in history you were born.

It’s what people much smarter than us used to label wertfrei – it’s amoral, neutral, universal; value-free.

Not anymore! Now the field, or should I say practicum since ‘field’ is considered “insensitive” to say as it harkens back to the days of slaves working the fields of mathematics, is drenched in the terrible shade of white.

That’s right, boys and girls, math is white supremacy.

I’ve written about many things that I find absolutely ridiculous, but this might take the cake.

The best part is that a Vanderbilt professor who recently spouted such nonsense, combined with a whole bunch of other random imagined transgressions for the field of mathematics, proves that the downfall of civilization might very well be our collective stupidity versus the assumed inevitable nuclear apocalypse.

Say What Now?

Vanderbilt University assistant professor of mathematics Luis Leyva lectured at what is advertised as the ‘largest mathematics gathering in the world’ earlier this month at the Joint Mathematics Meetings of 2023 in Boston.

The title of Mr. Leyva’s lecture was:

‘Undergraduate Mathematics Education as a White, Cisheteropatriarichal Space and Opportunities for Structural Disruption to Advance Queer of Color Justice’

(Yes, that “of” typo appears in the original, which just really puts the icing on the cake.)

I can’t even with the title of this lecture; seriously, nobody at any point in time of quality checking the itinerary for this event looked at this title and pointed out any number of issues? Like perhaps the fact that this title alone damn near sucks up my word count limitation for my article?

At no point in this man’s overly degree’d educational career was he not forced to read Shakespeare’s Hamlet? Brevity is the soul of wit, my man, even if reading the classics is also “racist.”

Additionally, I see Luis here has jumped on the bandwagon of language crimes by adding ‘cis’ to anything related to anything oppositive of the progressive movement.

For example, I had to look up cisheteropatriarichal (which is very difficult to spell), and the definition I found was:

“a system of male, straight, conforming-to-assigned sex system power”

Oh, for Pete’s sake. I’m a highly educated individual, and I can tell you that’s a whole bunch of hogwash, and you can quote me on that.

Just think, I haven’t even touched on what he said in his lecture.

Re-Imagination Land

Mr. Leyva’s lecture was a two-parter, which means double the torture, double the gobbledegook. He discussed research he had accumulated from following the lives of a whopping 39 undergraduate queer and trans (“QT”) students “of color” pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) majors.

His research brought him to the following revelation:

“I conclude by re-imagining undergraduate mathematics education with structural disruptions that advance justice for learners marginalized across intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.”

First, it’s pretty telling that he could only find 39 “QT” students of color pursuing STEM. So, naturally, those on the left would argue that it’s because the white straight man is keeping QT, individuals of color, from entering the fields of STEM.

More than likely, there aren’t nearly as many QT people of color in the world as the left would like us to believe.

Second, Mr. Leyva’s conclusion says nothing. Literally; seriously, reread it, and you tell me what it says… the answer is nothing.

We Are The Punchline

When you dive deeper into who this Mr. Leyva is, the more you think, if you are a mother like me, that perhaps college is not the right path for your children.

Mr. Leyva works on research that:

“…explores narratives of oppression and agency across historically marginalized groups’ educational experiences to uncover interlocking functions of racism and cisheteropatriarchy in undergraduate STEM.”

He is also an affiliate in the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at Vanderbilt, where his work:

“…draws on critical race theory, women of color feminisms, and queer of color critique to conceptually and methodologically ground his scholarship, which centers historically marginalized voices in STEM higher education across intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.”

Does he actually do any… mathematics? Of course not, because college isn’t about higher learning anymore; it’s about bloated mission statements, overpriced vapid degrees, and the dismantling of common sense and logic.

And before you feel attacked, fellow white readers, Mr. Levya is also attacking our Arabic friends, who brought the numeral 0 to Europe through our old pal Fibonacci. (The chances of Mr. Levya knowing this are, ironically, zero – but after all, anyone can be a white supremacist these days, even blacks and Latinos!)

The Slow Creep

The reality is this concept of math being racist and sexist, and any other number of left-wing sticker shock accusations, has been going on for a few years. In 2021 the Oregon Department of Education pushed a training on teachers meant to push ‘ethnomathematics.’

What is ethnomathematics? Nobody knows, but I can tell you it’s not math.

The Oregon DoE claimed that “white supremacy manifests itself in the focus on finding the right answer.” That’s right; accuracy is racist.

Tell me, dear reader, do you feel confident driving over a bridge designed by someone who learned that the correct answer to a math problem is racist?

A fellow professor from Ben-Gurion University, Aryeh Kontrovich, said of Mr. Leyva’s lecture:

“We can never all agree on what is just, while we can hopefully agree on what is mathematically correct, so math education should focus exclusively on the latter.”

Unfortunately, because too many on the right are too timid to have said anything in the past, we may have permanently relinquished mathematics to the looney toons who wish to destroy it, erring on the side of inaccurate virtue signaling rather than accurate equation solving.

Vanderbilt Freshman Noah Jenkins said after the lecture:

“Either you solve the equation properly, or you don’t. It really is that simple. It doesn’t matter if a gay person, a trans person, or whatever solves the problem, two plus two will always equal four.”

Typical white straight guy answer, Noah; keep it up; we need more brilliant mathematicians who understand the concept of addition, subtraction, multiplication, you know… math.

Because if we aren’t careful before long, as G.K. Chesterton once wrote:

“Fires will be kindled to testify that two and two make four. Swords will be drawn to prove that leaves are green in summer.”
